Do Contractors Need a CRM? HubSpot Free vs an FSM's Built-In CRM

A CRM (customer relationship management) system tracks who called, what you quoted, and what's next. Most field service tools already include one. So the real question for a small contractor is whether you need a separate CRM.

Short answer: Most small service contractors don't. The client manager in Jobber or Housecall Pro covers leads, quotes, follow-ups, and job history. A separate CRM like HubSpot's free CRM makes sense when your sales process is long (design-build, big remodels, commercial bids) or when you market well beyond your past customers.

What the FSM tools already include

Jobber lists a client manager (CRM), a client hub where customers approve quotes and pay invoices, request forms, online booking, lead tagging (synced with Mailchimp and QuickBooks Online), automated notifications, and two-way texting on Grow and up. Pipeline, a view of every request and quote moving toward a booked job, is a $49/mo add-on on lower plans and is included on Plus.

Housecall Pro shows Pipeline (automated lead follow-ups tracked in one place) among the tools on its pricing page; check which plans include it. Review management is on Basic and up.

Contractor Foreman includes a Leads Manager that tracks lead sources and stages, plus an Opportunities module for bids before they become projects.

HubSpot's free CRM

HubSpot says its CRM is free with no expiration date and no credit card required. It connects to over 2,000 apps through the HubSpot Marketplace and has iOS and Android apps. Paid Marketing, Sales, and Service hubs are available when you need more, and your data stays in the same system when you upgrade.

Missed calls are a separate problem

A CRM only tracks the leads you actually catch. If calls go to voicemail while you're on a roof, read how to stop missing calls on a one-truck operation on Trade AI Stack.
